This is a great product. As someome mentioned there is also a listening section on the exam. The best way to study for that section is audiobooks or the practice test online, they have an appendix available where they list what music selections they have played with the questions on the listening practice test. That and just general musicality is the best way to study for the listening part. The audiobook "the history of classical music" and online quizzes guessing the interval etc. But i mean you should be able to know what a 3rd or octave spunds like if you are taking this.
This def helped for the multiple choice and the essays. The practice tests and materials given (such as sample audio items) by the state were by far the most helpful but this was also a crucial part of my studying. I am older and needed some refreshing since it had been awhile since my college music classes.

For over $40, this book should adequately prepare you for the Music MTEL exam. It doesn't.

There is no essay prep and none of the world music information that the book spends so much time on was even on the exam. The exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions and 2 essays. Nearly 40 of those multiple choice questions are based on listening excerpts. Does this book come with a similar CD to provide listening examples? Nope!

The test questions provided in this book weren't indicative of the actual test. For over $40 you end up with a tiny booklet that does more harm than good.
I purchased the MTEL Music (16) book and love it! It gives me the nice short synopsis sections which allows me to focus better on the real content.
I found this book to be pretty helpful in reviewing for the exam, although the test that was included had several questions that had not been covered in the review. Over all, I really found this guide helpful to review and to prep for the test. It helped me feel confident on the test day
